Traffic Intelligence System

SPAGEO JV HERMS is developing a system that will deliver the best possible routes to drivers within larger metropolitan areas. The routes found will be dependent on traffic regulations, traffic patterns, and disruptions.

Our primary strategic goal is to promote Pervasive Traffic Intelligence. Intelligent systems that strengthen the crucial collaboration between all decision makers - both the individual drivers and the authorities. Combining the possibilities in real time adaptive infrastructure control with tactical and operational traffic planning for satellite-based (GNSS) in-vehicle units or nomadic devices is our primary objective.

The intention is to let navigation unit’s work as interconnected agents that will share information to achieve the best distribution of traffic possible. The term 'agents' is used in computer science to describe units that will contribute to find a combined computational result by each solving a minor part of the computation.

The computations are based on state of the art methods within the domains of traffic research, mathematics, operations research, and computer science.

Current work areas include: Distributed Travel Mode Detection on Smart Phones, Statistical Validation of Infrastructure Information from GPS-units, Information Migration between Heterogeneous Digital Map Representations, and Field Operational Test on multi information source route guidance, and promoting Pervasive Traffic Intelligence.

Since 2009 we have provided consultancy and applications within Floating Vehicle Data (FVD / Probe data) and Digital Networks for the Danish Road Directorate (DRD). Recent work has been on digital network coupling and detailed refined data precision estimation.

We have also worked on detailed map matching (sometimes named route matching). The DRD has very high precision and representation requirements and we have assisted in developing additional advanced data grooming and refinement algorithms.

All algorithms and applications have been developed for both online/real-time operation as well as bulk computations for historic statistical results.

We are presently maintaining the DRD real-time FVD portal handling several thousand simultaneously active vehicles. Continuous idea and solution development for real data and applications with the DRD has proven that we can push the envelope for deployed ITS.
